71Adding More Zip to Your Tuna Salad Recipe
Tuna salad is one of those basics that most people seem to grow up with. Sometimes it is combined with macaroni to make a main dish salad, other times it is put between some type of bread to make a sandwich or a melt. There are loads of variations on the basic recipe if you would like to add more flavor to your tuna salad recipe or just try something a little bit different.
The standard tuna salad recipe that most people start with involves mayonnaise and canned tuna. Further, salt, pepper, celery, chopped onions, pickles or relish, mustard, and lemon juice are common additions. Although some people sometimes prefer to replace mayonnaise with yoghurt, there is a version without mayonnaise that includes tuna, hard boiled eggs, bread and butter pickles, sweet pickle juice, celery, salt and pepper. Less common additions include green olives, capers, Worcestershire sauce, sour cream, almonds, cinnamon, curry, tarragon, broccoli, cauliflower, crab, dill and cranberries. Sandwiches and melts sometimes include lettuce leaves and tomato slices as well as various types of cheeses.
For a dinner salad, most people add macaroni and peas to the basic tuna salad. Some recipes even call for hard boiled eggs. However, there are other versions, such as one that contains pasta, tuna, tomato, cucumber, red bell pepper, green onion, celery, ranch dressing and fresh dill. Another unique option that doesn't include pasta is made from tuna, oranges, cashews, mayonnaise, ginger, lemon juice, salt and pepper served over spinach leaves.
To give your tuna salad recipe a more Asian taste, you can add ginger root, green chili, onion, curry powder, mayonnaise, and lemon juice to your tuna. Fans of sushi might want to try wasabi paste instead of the green chili and curry powder.
For a Tex-Mex style tuna salad recipe, you can also mix your tuna with salsa, black olives, green onion, celery, salsa, sour cream, and cumin and serve the salad with lettuce in taco shells. Another option that is more of a dinner salad includes tuna, red onion, red and orange bell peppers, black beans, green chili peppers, mayonnaise, cumin, salt and pepper, cilantro, and salsa.
A Mediterranean option for tuna salad includes tuna, kalamata olives, olive oil, capers, garlic, and lemon juice.
These are just a few of the ingredients you can add to give more zip to your traditional tuna salad. The options are virtually endless and really do depend on your taste and what foods you like.
