In a world of ever-increasing pressure to cut costs and improve efficiencies, businesses have been stepping up the plate and inventing applications for computer equipment that has never existed before. It's not only businesses who benefit from this innovation, however, as the inventions which are now available to the everyday person can be quite varied. One such invention that has managed to change the world for both businesses and in some cases, individuals, is video conferencing. The idea of video conferencing is not new; in fact, it has been around nearly as long as the idea of television has been with us. However, the ways in which video conferencing is being used today are very new. This is a new market and a new trail that has been initiated, and which can be expected to change and develop significantly in the years and decades to come.

What is video conferencing, anyway? Quite simply, video conferencing is the equipment or software through which one meeting can be simultaneously conducted or broadcast to another, and where direct interactions between two meeting parties can take place. Indeed, entire boardrooms can be beamed and transmitted across continents and oceans in order to bring together executives from around the world, for whom maybe travel expenses associated with such an event would be a considered a waste of money. Video conferencing is today used and carried out everywhere, from individual users at home, to entire corporations.

One extremely popular way to use video conferencing is for individuals to engage in conversation via a web platform known as Skype. Skype operates through a webcam and some web applications that can be downloaded onto a computer very easily. With these basic requirements, individuals around the world from one another can hold one or many face-to-face conversations. Skype is also a free service and has recently been increasing in popularity. Beyond Skype, major corporations in America are also offering video conference solutions. Companies such as Tandberg, Cisco, Polycom and Webex all offer sophisticated packages which entail all aspects of the video event, including streaming over web service, audio visual integration, etc. These companies are all proud to be the pioneering ground breakers within this industry, although the idea of video conferencing was firstly initiated through NASA, which was years before any corporation would have ever considered such methods seriously.
